Continue To Talk About My First Video Production Project

Our first BCST 140 project didn't begin until October 9 of last year, and our goal is set to have all people's project completed before Veteran's Day. It seemed like we didn't have a lot of time to prepare, but we did have two special rehearsal from each group one week before the actual production.

On September 30, 2009, Eloy Najera's project (I forgot if Stephen Reeve's was also done on the rehearsal or not) was selected as the rehearsal project. I was one of the camera persons for Eloy's project, and I can tell you that I was really scared, not just scare, but I'm also afraid, at the moment I walked behind the camera, my hands were shaking, my palms were sweated. I felt that I'd be sent to the execution ground, I did really think to evade my responsibility and leave the class, so I paced slowly along the studio and didn't get into my position. I didn't know what to do, a few seconds before the rehearsal began, the teacher called everyone in, all people are ready in their position. Camera 2's operator was not ready yet, where's the operator? Yes, it's me. "You should do your job…" Natalie Sancimino's few words woke me up and began to walk to the back of the big studio camera. All the camera persons have their headphones on, so did the director Eloy, TD, Audio Operator, and CG Operator. "Quiet on set!" Eloy yelled out, all of us were ready to roll…

Transbay Terminal... We Will Remember You Forever...

Time To Say Goodbye To Transbay Terminal

As many of you know, today is the last day of operation of the Transbay Terminal, one of the traffic hubs of San Francisco and an important historical landmark of transportation. In less then an hour, this 71-year-old transit hub will be permanently closed and finishing the historical mission. After midnight tonight, the terminal will be temporarily relocated to the open-air style Temporary Terminal on Howard and Main streets in San Francisco, the old Transbay Terminal will be demolished and will be replaced a new multi-modal transportation center which will have 11 transit systems in it. The new Transbay Transit Center is scheduled to open in 2017.

I came to the City for only about nine years, so I can't tell you too much of my emotion on the closing of Transbay Terminal. But one thing I can certainly tell you is that transit hub is dirty with overwhelming stench and lots of beggars, moreover, I think there is not enough maintenance and management on the Terminal. That's why I think the Terminal is so ugly. Honestly, I've only been to there for several times since I moved to the City.

Yesterday I went to the Transbay Terminal again for the last time before it is closed, I took a look on that old transit hub for one last time, I also took a lot pictures and videos from outside the Terminal to the inside. That will be a memory of mine and many San Franciscans, and we can only remember it with the pictures. The trip to the Transbay Terminal yesterday afternoon just liked to witness the end of an era.

Goodbye, Transbay Terminal. We'll be seeing a new Transbay Transit Center on the same place in 2017 and we'll be the witnesses again of that new transit hub.

Here are some of the pictures I took in the Transbay Terminal yesterday afternoon, you can click here to view all them all.

Remembering My Very First Video Production Project

People always say their first time were unforgettable, so do I. When I looked at those pictures taken in the old CCSF video production studio in Fall 2009, they made me to remember my very first video project that I created, produced and directed, it just like something happened yesterday.
The first video project that we did was actually a project of still pictures, it's not 100% video. I still remember we were just sitting down and listening the lectures at the very beginning of the video production class. After a few weeks of lectures and basic ideas of video production, we started doing actual production by using all the equipment in the studio. Studio cameras, server, switcher, character generator, audio mixer, just name a few. The still graphics project was assigned after we received the basic ideas on how to operate those equipment, we're then divided into two separate group, I was assigned into group one. Since this is a group project, everyone had a chance to be the director, on the other hand, everyone had to work as assistant director, technical director, camera person, etc. The roles were rotated accordingly, for example, if I was a TD for this classmate's project, I'd be the CG Operator for another classmate's project. Therefore, everyone had a chance to work on the equipment.
Honestly speaking, I was so tense when I understood that I have to work on the project. The biggest reason was I had only a few ideas on how to operate the equipment in the studio, by the time before we started working on the project, I'd only used the studio cameras for a few time. Another fact was that I worried that I might mess up other's projects by doing something wrong that I didn't know. Anyway, I still needed to do it because it was part of the grade.
The first production kicked off on October 9 of last year. And the director / producer was the pretty well-known DJ and musician Eloy Najera. (See? We've got so many talents in class!) After Eloy's project, we were also working on Stephen Reeves and Marek Damm. I was the camera person (actually we had three camera persons on each production) for both Eloy and Marek projects, and LD for Steve's project.
The production had started, everyone was ready on their positions. What happened next? It was really funny…

Learning, Learning, Keep Learning

Checking the calendar this morning, I noticed that another new semester of classes is going to kick off in just about a week or two. That means all students should ready for their another year of school life and I wish all of them to have a successful year.

For me, besides my works, I also decided to continue my on-going studies of sound recording and video production / editing this semester. And for the upcoming semester, I'm going to learn ProTools and Avid Media Composer, I have absolutely no idea on how to use them as of right now, another fact is I have never use those software before, so it could be a challenge to learn something new for the first time. Nevertheless it could be very hard to learn something you have never known it before, (just like a baby learning how to walk) I always believe a Chinese proverb "If you work at it hard enough, you can grind an iron bar into a needle". That means if I could study and practice them diligently, I could simplify what is complicated, and eventually master the tricks of ProTools and Avid Media Composer. If you don't get it by doing once, do it twice; if you still don't get it, do it ten times; ten times don't work, do it hundred times; hundred times still don't work, try it make it for a thousand time. Victor Lei, I know you can do it for sure!

Right now, I remember what my classmate said on the FaceBook: "Try your best, nothing is impossible!" Yes, if I want to do it, I want to get it, I will work it hard, and certainly nothing is impossible. I'm ready to meet a challenge, how about you?

Judge Overturns California's Same Sex Marriage Ban

California's ban on same sex marriage failed its first major legal challenge in a landmark federal court case Wednesday when a district judge ruled that the ban violated the U.S. Constitution.

Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker's ruling comes in response to a lawsuit brought by two same-sex couples and the city of San Francisco. The suit claimed the ban was an unlawful infringement on the civil rights of gay men and lesbians.

"The contrary evidence proponents presented is not credible," Walker ruled. "Indeed, proponents presented no reliable evidence that allowing same-sex couples to marry will have any negative effects on society or on the institution of marriage."

"The process of allowing same-sex couples to marry is straightforward, and no evidence suggests that the state needs any significant lead time to integrate same-sex couples into marriage."

"Moral disapproval alone is an improper basis on which to deny rights to gay men and lesbians," Walker continued. "The evidence shows conclusively that Proposition 8 enacts, without reason, a private moral view that same-sex couples are inferior to opposite-sex couples."

Proposition 8, which outlawed gay marriages in California five months after the state Supreme Court legalized them, passed with 52 percent of the vote in November 2008. The vote followed the most expensive campaign on a social issue in U.S. history.

However, Walker ruled that "Proposition 8 fails to advance any rational basis in singling out gay men and lesbians for denial of a marriage license. Indeed, the evidence shows Proposition 8 does nothing more than enshrine in the California Constitution the notion that opposite- sex couples are superior to same-sex couples."

He said that "because California has no interest in discriminating against gay men and lesbians, and because Proposition 8 prevents California from fulfilling its constitutional obligation to provide marriages on an equal basis, the court concludes that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional."

Attorneys on both sides have said an appeal was certain if Walker did not rule in their favor. The case will go to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals then the Supreme Court if the high court justices agree to review it.

Anticipating such a scenario, the lawyers representing Protect Marriage, the coalition of religious and conservative groups that sponsored Proposition 8 in 2008, filed a legal brief Tuesday asking Walker to stay his decision if he overturns the ban, thereby barring same-sex couples from marrying while an appeal was pending.

"Same-sex marriages would be licensed under a cloud of uncertainty, and should proponents succeed on appeal, any such marriages would be invalid," the Protect Marriage lawyers wrote.

San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera, who worked with the legal team fighting the ban, said he was grateful to Walker for making the ruling.

"Today's ruling strikes a resonant chord against discrimination that should not only withstand appeal, but change hearts and minds," he said. "I'm extremely grateful to Judge Walker for a thorough and well reasoned decision that powerfully affirms the U.S. Constitution's promise of equal protection."

Walker presided over a 13-day trial earlier this year that was the first in a federal court to examine if states can prohibit gays from getting married without violating the constitutional guarantee of equality.

Supporters argued the ban was necessary to safeguard the traditional understanding of marriage and to encourage responsible childbearing.

Opponents said that tradition or fears of harm to heterosexual unions were legally insufficient grounds to discriminate against gay couples.

The ruling puts Walker at the forefront of the gay marriage debate. The longtime federal judge was appointed by President Ronald Reagan.

In an unusual move, the original defendants, California Attorney General Jerry Brown and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, refused to support Proposition 8 in court.

"Judge Walker had the great responsibility of deciding whether Proposition 8 violates the Constitution of the United States," Schwarzenegger said in statement following the ruling. "He heard in-depth arguments from both sides on fundamental questions of due process, equal protection and freedom from discrimination. There are strong feelings on both sides of this issue, and I am glad that all viewpoints were respected throughout the proceedings. We should also recognize that there will continue to be different points of view in the wake of this decision."

Currently, same-sex couples can only legally wed in Massachusetts, Iowa, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire and Washington, D.C.

Spending Fun Time With My Relatives and Cousins

My best cousin who is from Macau has already come to the US for a summer vacation with his mother. And yesterday morning was our first time reunion for more than 2 years, both of us were very excited and hugged each other. It just like we had missed so long even though it was only 2 years, and I can't describe my excitement and happiness in just a few words!

After a brief reunion, my father, my aunts, and of course my cousin and I decided to go Sacramento for an one-day family vacation and fun. While on our way to Sacramento, my cousin and I had so many things to talk about, he asked me about the life here in the US, and I also asked him about his recent life and school in Macau. Both of us were talking very congenially and I have not been that happy for so many years.

Then we went to the vacation of one of my aunts, both my cousin and I had a brief ping-pong match, and it was only for fun. We also went out to my aunt's backyard and take a look on her tomatoes, melons and pumpkins. Both of us were taking a lot of pictures together on the backyard, and we felt so hot in the backyard! The weather was quite toasty in Sacramento, so we decided to go back inside after taking the pictures. We still had so many things to talk about, we talked about eating in McDonald's, the difference on the food between the McDonald's in Macau and here in the US. He said the menu in McDonald's in Macau is frequently changed, but in the US, I told him that our menu has not changed that much for years. He also told me that the "Shake shake fries" (which is a bag of french fries with seasoning powder, and you actually have to pour it into the bag of french fries and shake it) has been re-introduced in Macau, I missed so much about the McDonald's food in Macau, I really want to go back and enjoy them.

After spending a day with my cousin and relatives in Sacramento, my father and I, along with one of my aunts returned to San Francisco last night. My cousin will stay in Sacramento for a couple days, then he and his mother will take a cruise to Mexico and its coastal areas. I'm really envious of this cruise, I've never been anywhere since I came to the US, honestly, not even Mexico, I have never been to Los Angeles and San Diego, and I don't even know how does New York City looks like. I just like a frog in the well and can only see a small part of the World.

After the brief happiness, everything returns to stress and pressure... And I have my lonely life once again, maybe I'm just suitable for a lonely life, just sitting down and facing the four broken walls in my apartment unit... Nothing else, if I want to know more about the World, it is impossible because there's no way to make it possible. Victor Lei, don't think a lot of useless things, accept to reality!

Federal authorities said Tuesday that they've arrested 10 store employees and seized $100 million worth of counterfeit goods in raids of shops at San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf.

At a morning news conference in Crissy Field Tuesday, amid tables laden with gaudy fake designer purses, sunglasses, wristwatches and shoes, U.S. Attorney Joseph Russoniello and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director John Morton announced the indictments of 11 merchants and sales clerks.

Russoniello and Morton said a total of 230,000 fake items were seized from shops in the popular tourist hub over the course of the two-year investigation.

Items were also confiscated from private homes and storage areas in San Francisco and San Leandro, and from the Port of Oakland.

The items, many of which were falsely labeled as Oakley, Nike, Armani, Prada and Louis Vuitton merchandise, appeared to come from China, they said. Eight Fisherman's Wharf shops were raided and are now closed.

This investigation began in 2007, when customs agents intercepted a suspicious shipping container at the port of Oakland. Inside - agents found more than 50,000 counterfeit items. According to a federal indictment, many of those items and other counterfeit goods ended up at the Fisherman's Wharf stores.

Both men emphasized that counterfeiting, in addition to being a crime, is a threat to the U.S. economy.

"American business is under assault from counterfeiters and pirates," Morton said. "[Counterfeiting] robs Americans of jobs. They don't pay legitimate wages or invest in new advertising,"

"Whether it's in the flea market, stores or over the Internet...intellectual property thieves are undermining the United States' economy, on a grand scale," he said.

The suspects appeared to have come from China, Russionello said. Two were in the United States illegally, one had been granted asylum and another had a green card.

Among those charged were Hui Jin Jen, 41, owner of L&J Fashions and JC Trading Co., and her co-owner Jia Cun Liu; De Le Chen, 40, a clerk at New CWK Gift Store, and his wife and Jen's sister Hui Juan Chen, 37, owner of New CWK Gift Store; and Shelley Xue Hua Lin, 39, owner of New Life Gift Store.

The others charged are Ying Hei Lau, 57, who maintained two storage units in San Leandro; Huamin Wu Mei, 54, who paid rent on the storage units; Kan Wen Chong, 44, owner of C&K Gifts, and his wife Xiu Jing Ye, 41, the co-owner; Fernando Viseu, owner of La Bella Boutique and a second unnamed store nearby, and his wife Sok Wa Chong Viseu, 50, who worked at both stores.

All live in San Francisco, except, Mei, who lives in San Leandro.

The suspects have been charged with conspiracy, smuggling goods into the United States, and trafficking in counterfeit goods. If convicted, they could face extended prison terms and millions of dollars in fines.

Russionello said all of the suspects had "a working relationship." Some were even a part of the same family.

"It is not happenstance," he said, "This was a business enterprise that obviously originated overseas."

The penalties for smuggling goods into the U.S. is up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000-fine.

Amtrak service in the East Bay between Emeryville and Jack London Square in Oakland has been stopped due to the derailment of a freight train.

Amtrak said a Union Pacific freight train has derailed about a mile west of the Emeryville station.

Several cars jumped the tracks under the MacArthur maze, sending cargo containers on to the rails. Just before 7 p.m., the front section of that train pulled away.

No word has been given about possible injuries.

Amtrak said it is working to get passengers between the Emeryville and Oakland stations by bus, but riders should expect significant delays through the area.

A True Story About American Dream - Commemorate The Ninth Anniversary Of My Immigration To The US

Time really goes fast, and one week from today I'll have been living the City of San Francisco for exactly nine years. For past nine years, I've experienced many highs and lows of my life, downstream and upstream, on the other hand I experienced a lot of grievances and pressure, and I often hear so many gossips from those idlers, sometimes even rumor. Every time when I sit down, I frequently think of the same question: Victor, what do you want to do in the US? Why did you come the US even you'd probably known that you would bear a lot of pressure? The one key question I always ask myself is "What is the price to be an immigrant?" That's why I want share a true story about "Simon" and his family, who was also immigrated to the US from Macau almost 11 years ago. It could be a huge difference for 11 years, but to "Simon" and his family, nothing is more painful than that 11 years, they couldn't even achieve American dream, the only things they have are tragedy and sadness.

Let me talk a little bit about "Simon". He was actually my best friend and classmate when I was in grade school in Macau. His both parents were senior civil servants of the Macau Government. “Simon”, his younger sister and their parents were living happily in Macau as middle class, the family had no worries. In October 1999, in order to provide “Simon” and his sister “better education”, (and that is a very common reason for parents sending their children to other countries) their parents decided to move the whole family to the country they had never been before – United States.

"Simon's" tragic American dream began October 1999. At that time, the entire "Simon's" family arrived to the U.S. soil, they first lived in San Francisco for no more than two weeks, and then they settled in Sacramento. The "Simon" family had never thought their lives in this dream country were so tough, first, the whole family had to rent an old apartment unit near downtown Sacramento, $680 per month, and the living environment was extremely bad, absolutely not suitable for a family of four. Second, "Simon's" parents did not find any job for almost 6 months; the whole family was relied on the money that they brought from Macau. Few months after coming to the U.S., “Simon’s” father got a job as a handyman, however, his wage was extremely low, and that made the lives of the family more difficult.

But the more tragic lives were yet to come. In early 2002, “Simon’s” mother started her own business in Downtown Sacramento, the store sales were pretty good for the first few months, but it was just flash in the pan. The sales started to decline in late 2002, with fewer and fewer people came to her store; but “Simon’s” mother thought that was not big deal, she decided to expand her business. The most fatal blow to “Simon’s” family happened in March 2005, a swindler posed as a businessman and purchased a large quantity of clothes, and “Simon’s” mother was pleasantly surprised and thought that was the opportunity to turn around. What a pity, the god of luck had never been kind to this family. One month after the “businessman’s” purchase, it turned out that person was using fake credit cards, (probably stolen) as a result, all credit card transactions involved with the purchase were denied by the bank. However, a large quantity of clothes had been already shipped to the fraudster, which caused “Simon’s” mother owed a huge amount of debts, and eventually caused her bankruptcy in late 2005. In order to help his mother to repay debts, “Simon’s” father decided to sell all his properties in Macau. The “Simon’s” family became nothing. NOTHING!!!

The whole story has not ended yet. Few months after “Simon’s” mother declared bankruptcy, for some unknown reasons, or may be the sudden change of family; “Simon” had a great change in his temperament. He became manic, unmotivated and low self-esteem, he later was infected with drug addiction, and he couldn’t extricate himself. One day in 2006, “Simon” was searched by police in the street, and found several tablets of ecstasy inside his pockets. He was arrested immediately and later convicted on possession of dangerous drugs, “Simon” served two years of imprisonment, and the future of a promising young man was destroyed.

Last year I met him and he told me that he finished his prison term in late 2008. He also told me that he couldn't find a job because no one would like to hire him, on the other hand, he doesn't possess a college degree, that makes him more difficult to find a job. "Simon", now 24, is still struggling for his life.

The story of “Simon’s” family is that depressing, very depressing. Sometimes I think if they were still living in Macau, they might have stable lives over there… And now, everything in the country is a nightmare to the family, nothing more.

See? That's "Simon's" story about his life in US. For many people, US is a place where they pursuit and achieve American dream, but for "Simon" and his family, American dream is just a horrible nightmare. That's America! Many good stories and bad stories of new immigrants were happening everyday. As an immigrant, there're a lot of challenges that those native born people have never experienced and understood. If you have never been an immigrant, you'll never know how difficult to be an immigrant.

The question pops out in my head again: What is the price as an immigrant?

T This is such a great song, and it's one of my favorites.

Pammie Lowe

Yes, check this out. She is such a talent with great voice, and of course a sweat face. She was my classmate in the studio video production class last Fall and she was really awesome as a co-host of our final project "San Francisco Live". Now she is a country singer in her hometown Benicia and often performing live in there. Many of her live performance have been uploaded onto YouTube such as this one.

I always think that she looks and sings like Taylor Swift, doesn't she? Guess what? I'd buy one if she releases her first single!

My Cousin - 2

Let me continue to talk about my cousin today. How old is my cousin? My cousin is now 17 years old, which is 7 years younger than me and he is the only son of my father's sister. (which I call her aunt, but I just want clarify who's who) Maybe he is the only child of his parents, no brothers and no sisters, since as a little child, he has already loved to play with his cousins, but the cousin who always with him was me. When I was still in Macau, my home was on the same street as my cousin's, and indeed I'm his only cousin who was still in Macau as of 2001, the others, have been in the US for years. Another fact is we both speak the same language, therefore we don't have language barrier, most of his cousins can speak English only, a few of them can speak Chinese as well, though not so fluent.

In winter 1992, my aunt (who is now my cousin's mother) was pregnant. Before that, their family has no child. On the other hand, I was the only child of my parents and I often wished that I could have a brother or sister that time. Therefore, when I knew that my aunt was going to have a baby, I was so excited and it's just like I would have a brother. During my aunt's pregnancy, I frequently spent time to visit her, and she always invited me to her home. I think that may be another reason why we can be good cousins, and I think that he may have already known who I am when he was still in his mother's belly. It sounds funny, but it seems to be true. If you always with the unborn child and his pregnant mother, he would quickly recognize you when he was born, and you and him can be the best friend easily. Of course, spending the time together with him is also very important. No matter what the relationship is, two people getting along requires times and efforts, just like my cousin and I, it can't be done within one day or one week, is a long time effort, and you have to work on it constantly. Always spend time with him, play with him, he will be very impressed of you, and it is very valuable.

I will continue to talk more about my cousin again next time.
