Amtrak service in the East Bay between Emeryville and Jack London Square in Oakland has been stopped due to the derailment of a freight train.

Amtrak said a Union Pacific freight train has derailed about a mile west of the Emeryville station.

Several cars jumped the tracks under the MacArthur maze, sending cargo containers on to the rails. Just before 7 p.m., the front section of that train pulled away.

No word has been given about possible injuries.

Amtrak said it is working to get passengers between the Emeryville and Oakland stations by bus, but riders should expect significant delays through the area.
