Giants Beat L.A., Move Into First Place In NL West

Story posted 2010.09.16 at 10:24 PM PDT

Aubrey Huff hit a three-run homer, Buster Posey had a solo shot and the San Francisco Giants moved into first place in the NL West with a 10-2 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday night.

Jonathan Sanchez (11-8) struck out a career-high 12 as the Giants took a half-game lead on the Padres after San Diego lost 4-0 at St. Louis. San Francisco is in sole possession of first place for the first time since May 6.

Dodgers starter Ted Lilly (8-11) was done after 3 1-3 innings for his shortest outing of the season. This was just his third loss in nine starts since joining the Dodgers at the trade deadline.

Russ Mitchell homered for his first career hit leading off the fifth for Los Angeles. He had been 0 for 15.

Huff and Posey connected for back-to-back homers in the third, the seventh time the Giants have hit consecutive homers this season.

Jose Guillen added a two-run drive in the fifth to make it 8-2. It was his 18th home run of the season and second with the Giants. Guillen returned to the starting lineup after missing Wednesday's game with a painful neck. He underwent an MRI exam Thursday and said everything was fine.

Freddy Sanchez added a two-run double in the eighth.

All the offense helped Sanchez win his third straight decision. The left-hander, who has been one of the Giants' most reliable starters down the stretch, recorded his seventh career game with double-digit strikeouts and fourth of the season. He allowed four hits and one run in seven innings and didn't walk a batter for the second time in his 30 starts.

Sanchez's strikeouts were the second-most by a Giant this year. Tim Lincecum struck out 13 at Florida on May 4.

Lilly was tagged for five runs and seven hits, and he struck out three and walked one. He had been so reliable for Los Angeles every fifth day that manager Joe Torre said before the game, "Lilly's been such a savior for us in more ways than one."

Giants manager Bruce Bochy is using a leadoff man by committee in the absence of the injured Andres Torres, recovering from an emergency appendectomy Sunday. Edgar Renteria took on the job with a lefty starter going and had a triple among his four hits. Milwaukee starts left-hander Randy Wolf on Friday night, so Renteria will probably be in there again.

The Giants captured the season series with the Dodgers 10-8, San Francisco's first series victory against its rivals since going 10-9 in 2005. The teams open the 2011 season facing off for four games at Dodger Stadium from April 1-4, 2011.

Los Angeles finished up a 10-game road trip and returned home for a weekend series with the Rockies. Los Angeles faces divisional opponents the rest of the way.

Matt Kemp struck out in the sixth to match his career high of 153 also done in 2008.

A freighter coming into the Port of Oakland Thursday morning brought along some unexpected cargo. A dead whale that the vessel had apparently struck and killed while at sea was resting on the ship's bow when it arrived, a U.S. Coast Guard spokeswoman said.

The Coast Guard received a report at about 10 a.m. that the cargo ship Northern Vitality from Long Beach had struck the whale, Coast Guard Lt. j.g. Laura Williams said.

The animal got stuck on the ship's bow and was dragged along with the ship until it docked at Berth 57 at the port, Williams said.

Officials from the Marine Mammal Center -- who came out to examine the carcass and take samples -- told KTVU late Thursday afternoon that it appeared to be a minke whale, which is a small species of baleen whale that feeds by straining krill through plates in their mouths.

Officials said the 25-to-30 foot long whale may have been dead before being hit and ending up on the ship's bow. Workers alongside the ship's berth were surprised and saddened to see sharks show up to feed on the carcass.

"I hate to see it. That's life, you know?" said Conservation Corp worker Greshawn Daggs. "We're caretakers of the environment. We love the environment. Hate to see it."

"I don't think this is a common occurrence," said Fish & Game Warden Clint Garrett. "In my experience I have not seen this before."

The Marine Mammal Center said the last time there was such an incident in San Francisco Bay was in 2008.

The Center added that sometime Friday morning the whale carcass would be towed out to sea.

Finally... I Have Acquired My Internship!

After more than three weeks of searching, sending resumes and cover letters to many internship sites, I have finally acquired an internship for CBS 5 / KPIX's TV show "Eye On The Bay" and I will begin my internship on next Tuesday.

For me, it is such a big milestone because I have moved one step ahead for my career path. In the mean time, as I have found my internship, the searching of internships has also come to an end, so what I'm now focusing is my current internship, I will work hard, utilize my strengths and get my job done. Working in a TV station a great opportunity for me to gain a lot of experience, now I got it, I will not let my other potential opportunities to go away.

Speaking of my search for internship, I can say it didn't go very well at first. About one week before the new semester began, I started sending out cover letters and resumes to my college's own TV station EATV, as well as some other internship sites. However, at the moment, I really wanted to focus an internship within my college rather than an off-campus internship, so I didn't send resumes and cover letters to those internship sites. One week later, EATV Program Director, who is also an instructor for video production, contacted me to see if I had time to be interview in the following week, then I set up an interview appointment with him in the afternoon on August 26.

At that time, I was thinking that I could get that internship easily because I have many required experience and skills, on the other hand, I was also thinking that I may not quite ready for working off-campus. However, what you want doesn't equal to what you get. When I came to the interview that day, I felt so tense and I forgot anything that I wanted to tell Arthur, when Arthur asked me the questions, I couldn't even answered them clearly because I was so nervous. Arthur then told me that his station could only accept two interns this semester and each of them could only work for few hours a week. He said because of the short budget, he couldn't offer many hours to his interns. At the end of the interview, Arthur suggested me to gain real experience by working in the video production sites or TV stations, he told me that I should go out and explore the world by interning in TV stations rather than in my college. Then he showed me some listings of TV stations that were accepting interns. He told me to send resumes and cover letters to different TV stations, and I still remember what he told me when I left. He said the real meaning of internship is not about the money, but it is about the experience that can lead to the future job, $9 a hour looks good for some, but we have to think of long-term goal, the long-term goal is to find a real job.

After that night, I started thinking what Arthur said may be true, I have to have real working experience, and the best way to get those experience is to work in a TV station. Therefore, I began to send out resumes and cover letters to many Bay Area's TV stations, some organizations and companies, as well as some video production firms. Some of them responded me and asked if I could go for interviews, but many of them didn't get back to me at all.

But the things began to change. One week ago, Cassandra from the KPIX / CBS 5 TV station sent me an email if I was interested to come for an interview for the "Eye On The Bay" internship, then I set up an appointment with her on September 14 at 10:30 am, which was yesterday.

I came to the KPIX / CBS5 TV station around 10:30 am. Besides myself, two other new interns Rachel and Honeybee (what a lovely name!) were also interviewed at the same time. The interview was going really good, I think it's more like a discussion rather than a formal interview. Cassandra, the lady who conducted the interview for all three of us, asked us to sit together and shared something about ourselves, what do we want to do as an intern, and what kind of skills we want to acquire on the completion of the internship. Then Cassandra told us that she was also started as an intern, and she also told us something important that we have to know and understand them. We also asked some questions about the program and specifically what the general duties are, and Cassandra answered them very clearly and understandable. After about half-an-hour of interview, Cassandra took all three of us for a tour around the station. First we toured the intern working area, and we met so many great producers and editors and other great people for "Eye On The Bay", and of course, one the hosts Liam Mayclem. Then Cassandra took us to other departments in the station like the News Department, the Sales Department, the Business Department, just to name a few. Cassandra then brought us to Don's office, he is person who makes identification card for the interns. He asked each of us to sit down and took a "passport-style" picture, then we got our IDs few minutes later.

After we got our intern ID cards, we are officially the interns for "Eye On The Bay", we will start working next week. My shifts will be Tuesdays and Thursday from 9am - 5pm, so my first day will be on next Tuesday. I'm getting really excited!

Although there may be a lot of difficulties and obstacles when I work as an intern, I believe I can overcome much of them.

San Jose Favors Overhead High-Speed Rail Tracks

City leaders have endorsed overhead high-speed rail tracks through San Jose rather than a more costly tunnel.

The City Council on Tuesday voted 8-2 in favor of the cheaper, and noisier, 60-foot above ground track for the California High-Speed Rail Authority's proposed line. The tunnel project would have cost $2.5 billion, five times more than the above ground proposal.

But the San Jose Mercury News says the council vote comes with conditions.

The rail authority must agree by Oct. 1 that the city has the right to approve or reject overhead rail alignment in the Diridon Station area. If the authority disagrees, the council will ask for a full study on the tunnel proposal.

Additionally, the city must have a significant say on design and noise limits.

OAKLAND: Promising Jockey Paralyzed From Waist Down After Terrible Tumble

One of the top-rated jockeys in California remained at Oakland's Highland Hospital Tuesday night following a horrific spill at Golden Gate Fields Sunday that easily could have killed the young athlete.

Michael Martinez was in critical but stable condition after severing his spinal cord in a brutal fall during a weekend race, Golden Gate Fields track physician Dr. David Seftel said.

The 24-year-old started racing only four years ago, but the promising jockey has already won 168 races and is currently ranked 13th in the nation.

Martinez was riding Fair 'n Warmer, a 3-year-old filly, in the fifth race on Sunday. As Martinez was rounding a turn at approximately 35 miles an hour, his horse clipped the heels of another horse. Martinez was thrown to the ground and his 1,100-pound filly rolled over him, according to track officials.

Seftel got to him first.

"He was unconscious, barely breathing and had a mouthful of dirt," Seftel said.

As riders cleared the field, the doctor found Martinez had fractured vertebrae and a severed spinal cord.

"He broke all the ribs alongside that area," Seftel said. "[He] had bleeding into his lungs as well as a major head injury."

He is paralyzed from the waist down, according to Seftel.

The doctor it was the "worst injury we've seen" in at least the past decade at the racetrack.

"But this is a young man who is very strong, and despite all his injuries, it's probable that he will pull through," Seftel said.

On Tuesday, Martinez remained in a medically induced coma after undergoing 11 hours of emergency surgery Sunday night. Friends and family gathered at Highland Hospital to offer support.

His fiancee, Charlotte Garcia, is expecting the couple's first child at some point this week, Seftel said.

"He's a very warm person," Seftel said. "It's an unprecedented tragedy."

Martinez is the second-leading jockey during this summer's season at Golden Gate Fields, and had already won an earlier race on Sunday.

"Had a naturally ability with horses. Horses just responded for him," said Martinez's agent Dennis Patterson. "He got the most out of horses during the race. You know, he was just a rising star."

Family and friends just hope Martinez will recover with no regrets. His cousin Alex Solis, also a top-ranked jockey, said Martinez gave his all to the sport he loved so much.

"He accomplished a lot of the things that he wanted to do and life goes on," said Solis.

Fair 'n Warmer, the horse he was riding, scrambled back to her feet after the fall and appeared to be uninjured, track officials said.

Please Listen With Your Heart

Two days ago, our "Sound For Video" teacher Dana asked each of us to put the "listening" into practice. She asked us to listen all the sound when we are waiting for the bus, standing in a line or everywhere we can hear sounds.

In order to have that "practical experience", I went outside, standing on a sidewalk of busy road, closed my eyes and started listening to the sounds. I listened to the sounds for about two minutes and recorded them into my iPod. When I closed my eyes and listened to the sounds, I felt very comfortable even though I was standing on a busy street. When I closed my eyes, I could really hear every single sound, like the sound of the cars, the buses, the pedestrians, and the audible signals of traffic lights... None of them were jamming my ears.

Honestly I didn't always listen to every sound around me before, but on yesterday's "experience", I found out that I could listen to many sounds, and I also found out a key point when listening to sounds: Listen with my heart, not with my ears. When you can listen with your heart, that is the highest state of listening sound. I'm now learning how to listen and feel the sound with my heart. I believe that one day I can reach that highest level.
