Folks in parts of the Bay Area weathered record setting heat on Monday including triple-digit temperatures in some areas.

San Francisco reached 93 degrees, surpassing the previous record of 92 degrees for the 27th of September. Temperature records also fell in Mountain View where the temperature reached 96 degrees.

While it was warm along the San Francisco Bay it was downright hot inland. Santa Rosa reached 104 degrees which also set a new record for the date.

The hot day turned into a warm night all over the Bay Area and many people were out enjoying the heat after the sun went down. The fountains in downtown San Jose were busy with children as temperature still hovered around 95 degrees.

The warm weather didn't deter a group of students from San Jose State University.

"Definitely intense. But the more intense it is the better it is for us," said Edward Ferreras of San Jose State. "Prepares us for where we're going down south."

Better because the group is practicing for an upcoming club competition in Fullerton where the temperature Monday was a record 112 degrees.

The temperature reached 96 degrees in San Jose, one degree short of the record set back in 1958. San Jose firefighters took extra precautions.

A so-called "rehab unit" was brought in to provide water and shade for firefighters, who wear up to 50 pounds of equipment.

"Temperatures in excess of 90-95 degrees today, said Captain Chuck Rangel. "That takes a toll on the firefighters, so we need to make sure we have that extra staffing. Also we need to respond a lot of crews to those calls so we can rotate them and keep them fresh."

The department also brought in additional firefighters Monday to staff two extra engines because of the increased risk of a wildland fire.

PG&E said the heat put a strain on its equipment and caused outages in San Leandro, Walnut Creek and Brentwood.
