FREMONT: Heat Wave Delivers Record Temperatures Around Bay
Updated on: 2010-09-28 03:25:50
Folks in parts of the Bay Area weathered record setting heat on Monday including triple-digit temperatures in some areas.
San Francisco reached 93 degrees, surpassing the previous record of 92 degrees for the 27th of September. Temperature records also fell in Mountain View where the temperature reached 96 degrees.
While it was warm along the San Francisco Bay it was downright hot inland. Santa Rosa reached 104 degrees which also set a new record for the date.
The hot day turned into a warm night all over the Bay Area and many people were out enjoying the heat after the sun went down. The fountains in downtown San Jose were busy with children as temperature still hovered around 95 degrees.
The warm weather didn't deter a group of students from San Jose State University.
"Definitely intense. But the more intense it is the better it is for us," said Edward Ferreras of San Jose State. "Prepares us for where we're going down south."
Better because the group is practicing for an upcoming club competition in Fullerton where the temperature Monday was a record 112 degrees.
The temperature reached 96 degrees in San Jose, one degree short of the record set back in 1958. San Jose firefighters took extra precautions.
A so-called "rehab unit" was brought in to provide water and shade for firefighters, who wear up to 50 pounds of equipment.
"Temperatures in excess of 90-95 degrees today, said Captain Chuck Rangel. "That takes a toll on the firefighters, so we need to make sure we have that extra staffing. Also we need to respond a lot of crews to those calls so we can rotate them and keep them fresh."
The department also brought in additional firefighters Monday to staff two extra engines because of the increased risk of a wildland fire.
PG&E said the heat put a strain on its equipment and caused outages in San Leandro, Walnut Creek and Brentwood.

My First Week Working As EOTB Intern
What did I do on Tuesday? I was doing two assignments on that day. First, I help the show producer Henry Kaiser on researching some old pictures of a few Bay Area restaurants or hotels that have been opened for more than a century. It seemed like an easy work, but it turned out not that easy that I think. Because I had to search the pictures of the past, no the current pictures of the restaurants or hotels, another thing was the pictures should be large and clear enough to be shown on a TV screen because EOTB is produced in HD. I actually found a lot of pictures (I guess thousands) of those restaurants by googling their names, but only a few of them can be used, other pictures were either too small (like a thumbnail) or not old enough (like taken a few years ago). It took me almost 5 hours to get that assignment done. Later, I went to the internet and do some other researches for other Bay Area's restaurants for about 2 hours, and it was 5:00pm! Then I typed what did I do during the day, printed out the working report and put it into the intern folder. My first day of work was finished.
On Thursday, I was working with another intern Justin, who has been interning since last summer. Both of us were in the office that day because we didn't have to go out and shoot. First I checked emails and voicemails at the intern desk, then Justin showed me how to log video using the "CAT DV Pro" application. After he showed me how to do it, I was assigned to log Liam's video footage, A-rolls and B-rolls. First, I opened "CAT DV Pro", then I navigated to Liam's folder and open the folder that contains clips. I watched each of them and grouped the clips by giving them names, then I had to determine whether it was an A-roll or an B-roll, after finishing the sort of the clips, I was about to give each clip a description by watching them all one by one. I have to say that was really time-consuming because I had to watch the clip carefully and give a best and clear description of what I saw on the clip. By the end of the day, I could only finished giving descriptions for 2/3 of the clips.
After working in the EOTB office for the first week, I think even though we don't have that much of heavy duties like the news interns downstairs, it still take us several hours to get them done.

Gov't Issues 3rd Consecutive Spare The Air Day
Gov't Issues 3rd Consecutive Spare The Air Day
The Bay Area Air Quality Management District has issued a Spare the Air alert for Monday, a spokeswoman said.
Monday's smog alert is the third consecutive and the eighth for the summer season, Air Quality Management District spokeswoman Kristine Roselius said.
"We may have another one on Tuesday as well," Roselius added.
On Monday the Bay Area is expected to be mostly sunny with Coastal highs in the 70s to lower 80s and inland temperatures in the lower to mid 90s. Winds of 5 to 10 mph are expected.
"We're hoping that people re-think their commute tomorrow and take carpool or transit instead of driving alone," Roselius said.
There is no free transit tomorrow, and there is no wood-burning ban in place. Wood burning bans are common during winter Spare the Air alerts because of the particulate matter contained in wood smoke.
The air district monitors daily air pollution levels and produces air quality forecasts every day based on an index developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
When the index indicates unhealthy concentrations of ground-level ozone -- commonly known as smog -- the air district issues the Spare the Air alerts.
The Bay Area Air Quality Management District is a regional agency chartered with safeguarding air quality in the nine-county Bay Area.

SAN FRANCISCO: Tenderloin Scene Of Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting, Standoff
Updated on: 2010-09-26 08:58:08
The San Francisco Police officers in the Tenderloin had their hands full Sunday, having to handle two tense situations within blocks of each other, one of which was fatal.
First off, a man barricaded himself in his Tenderloin apartment Sunday afternoon, forcing responding officers to close nearby streets and begin negotiating with him to open up his apartment..
Officers and crisis negotiators responded to the 1400 block of Franklin St. where a man refused to leave an apartment building, San Francisco police Officer Chan said.
The standoff began when a tenant apparently forced his way into a neighbor's apartment. Frank Garcia said he heard yelling on the floor above him at about 7:45 a.m. Sunday
"Drove a piece of concrete through her door and then unlocked the door and went in," said Garcia. "And she sort of scared him somehow, got him to get out, made the 911 call, locked the door again, and that's about the time I showed up and one of the other neighbors showed up."
Garcia said the man mumbled something about secret service agents, and then went into his apartment and locked the door.
Officers closed off Franklin St. for several hours while the negotiations commenced.
Just a few blocks away, officers answered a noise complaint just a few blocks away, at the Granada Residence hotel at 1000 Sutter St., where the situation turned deadly.
Officers responded to a noise complaint in an apartment building in the 1000 block of Sutter Street at around 11:10 a.m., Sgt. Troy Dangerfield said.
Officers had received reports of an intense verbal argument and of someone - possibly a tenant - throwing stereo speakers out the window of a seventh floor apartment, Dangerfield said.
Police went to the apartment with the building's manager to make contact with the involved parties.
At some point during the investigation, an occupant of the apartment pulled out a weapon and the investigating officer fired his gun, fatally wounding the suspect.
"It sounded definitely like rapid fire, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, something like that," said neighbor Barry White.
Police had yet to identify the victim Sunday, but several neighbors said his name was Michael Lee and he was in his forties.
It was not known what weapon the suspect was holding that prompted the officer to shoot, and police did not say how many rounds were fired.
The shooting was being investigated by the police department's internal affairs department, the homicide unit and the San Francisco district attorney's office.
